"I am fascinated by how our brain combines vision and memory to form an internal image of the external world”, says Matthias Nau.

His passion has brought about an outstanding PhD thesis “Perception & the cognitive map: deriving a stable world from visual inputs for which he has now been awarded the prestigious Otto Hahn Medal by the Max Planck Society. Below, you can read Matthias Nau’s own words on his research and motivation.


What motivates you in your research?

“I am fascinated by how our brain combines vision and memory to form an internal image of the external world.

As a cognitive neuroscientist, I work at the intriguing intersection between biology, psychology, computer science, medicine, physics and philosophy. I have the huge privilege of learning something new about all these fields on a daily basis, and to gain in-depth insights into human brain function. Not only does this type of research generate new knowledge and the basis for medical applications, but it actively shapes the very understanding of ourselves as humans in this world. Motivation comes naturally.”

What questions would you like to answer by your research?

“Our memories are the building blocks of our imagination. Each time we recall our past, plan our future, or imagine fictitious events, our brain recombines existing memories anew. 

But how are memories formed in the first place? And how are they retrieved when needed? How does the brain even link the many sensory inputs that together define our visual experience? What role does our behaviour play in these processes? 

These are the questions I address.”

What research tools do you apply to these questions?

“I focus on spatial perception and eye movements using state-of-the-art functional neuroimaging of the human brain.”


“Receiving this award is a big honor for me”, says Nau. “It is also an award of the outstanding PhD environment that I worked in", he humbly notes. 
Matthias Nau wrote his PhD thesis at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Trondheim and was at the same time a guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig.

The human entorhinal cortex maps visual space using a grid-like neural code. The blue spots depict the neural activity of one visual grid cell as a function of gaze position. Using functional neuroimaging, we observed a neural-activity signature that is characteristic of thousands of such grid cells in the human brain.

Our brain combines visual stimuli and gaze positions to perceive space. A complex hierarchy of brain regions then infers a cognitive map of the environment from these spatial impressions, which is stored in our memories and guides our behavior (e.g. navigation).

The scientists at the Kavli Institute take part in various activities for communicating science to the public. The tools of the trade for communicating within the science community, like peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, are not good sources of knowledge for the public. Rather it’s through popular media, like online video platforms, television, social media, radio, podcasts, newspapers and magazines, as well as popularized talks and debates taking place in the public, that the majority of citizens gain knowledge and advice about science. 

Popular science communication demands a translation of both complexity, language and dissemination form, without compromising central scientific aspects. By explaining scientific relationships in a straight-forward language and contextualizing scientific facts within issues of public interest and concern, our scientists aim at not only translating information and facts into publicly accessible knowledge and understanding, but also at providing a vocabulary that allows the broader public to engage in and join discourses about local and global issues that involve both risks and benefits, and in which every citizen is a stakeholder. 

These insights represent the fundament for the institute's public outreach activities and science communication plan.

Starmus represents an innovative approach to boosting public understanding of science, inviting citizens to engage with and participate in scientific discourses, by bringing together the very best of science and art into a weeklong popular science dissemination festival. The festival is pulling thousands of visitors, and is covered by major media houses across the world.


In 2016 Edvard Moser participated in the Starmus festival III held in Tenerife, with a popular science lecture on grid cells. Edvard and May-Britt Moser have since been instrumental in bringing the Starmus initiative to Trondheim (2017).
