Research activity

Healthy brain functioning is dependent on the proper development and maturation of neural circuits. Conversely, when neural circuits do not develop appropriately, debilitating neurodevelopmental disorders can result.

Aim

The Quattrocolo Group seeks to understand the mechanisms that support the development and maturation of brain circuits by investigating the role that specific cell types play in early cortical network maturation.

Key research questions

  • What are the mechanisms guiding the establishment and maturation of cortical circuits?
  • What role do different cell types play in the formation of cortical circuits?

Tools & Methods

  • Molecular biology techniques
    • Western
    • RT-PCR
    • Transcriptomics
  • Neuroanatomical techniques
    • antero- and retrograde tracing
    • transgenic mice
    • Immunohistochemistry
  • In vitro slice physiology
    • patch-clamp recordings
  • In vivo neurophysiology
    • recordings from freely moving animals
