Task 2.2

Task 2.2 : CFD analysis of turbine design

The major objective of this project activity is numerical optimization of the new hydraulic designs using ANSYS.

The hydraulic designs of the Francis turbines from WP2.1 will be optimized by utilizing CFD-analysis and parametric optimization. The CFD-analysis will be utilized to optimize the hydraulic efficiency over a given range of operation with variable speed operation. The following cases will be optimized for both turbine designs:

  1. Francis turbine with guide vanes and optimum guide vane design according to earlier work by Sailesh Chitrakar, NTNU/KU if the runner is designed with GV case
  2. Francis turbine without guide vanes according to Igor Iliev’s findings from his PhD-work at NTNU
  3. Runner labyrinth sealing design and axial load
  4. Pressure pulsations from the rotor-stator interaction
  5. Optimized velocity of sediment particles in the blade passage
