Task 2.1

Task 2.1 : Francis Turbine Design (First site)

The major objective of this project activity is to design hydraulic design of a francis turbine.

The hydraulic design of the Francis turbine will be based on empirical data available from open source publications, text books and NTNU compendiums. The turbine design will be based on two existing hydro power plants which will be identified from WP 1.2 and WP 5. Ideally, these two turbines have different speed numbers, one with medium head and one turbine with high head. However, based on the availability and feasibility of the site for prototype testing, the two turbines might also have similar speed numbers. The designs will consist of the geometry of:

  1. Spiral casing and stay vanes
  2. Design with and without guide vanes
  3. Runner and labyrinth sealing
  4. Draft tube

Initial focus will be design of a Francis runner that can be operated in a turbine that is without guide vanes. In this task (WP 2.1), one of the two turbines selected for prototype testing, and is of low specific speed category will be designed.
