Course content
Course content
ENG1201 gives an introduction to the basic structures of the English language and to English usage. The course covers topics such as basic grammatical terms and structures, vocabulary and lexical connections, differences and similarities between English and Norwegian, discourse competence, text analysis, translation and other text production. It also focuses on academic essay writing. Special attention is given to aspects of the English language and usage that may pose a challenge to Norwegian students. The aim of this course is for students to gain a critical awareness of linguistic choices in various contexts as well as providing opportunities for students to develop their English language skills.

- are able to express themselves in appropriate and correct oral and written English.
Learning methods and activities
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, seminars and supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.
Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.
Compulsory assignments
• 2 assignments consisting of written tasks, online quizzes, or a combination
• 1 oral presentation
Students with the MLSPRÅK program may be assigned a separate obligatory assignment.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

The exam must be answered in English. Information about which dictionaries students are allowed to consult during the exam will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.

Students should have knowledge of English equivalent to that of students who have learned English as a programme subject over two years at Norwegian "videregående skole".
Required previous knowledge
Requires admission to one of the following study programmes: a bachelor's programme within the humanities/social sciences, the one-year programme in English or a master's programme with teacher education (within language, geography, history, physical education and sport, social science).
