Life After STroke – the LAST study
Life After STroke – the LAST study
Most people suffering from stroke will experience a significant improvement over the first weeks and months after onset. Physical activity and exercise are important factors to improve motor functioning as much as possible. It is nonetheless a challenge to maintain an adequate level of physical activity and exercise over time.
The main purpose of the LAST study is to test a new model, aiming to maintain a high level of motor functioning for 18 months after inclusion.
The LAST study is a randomised, controlled, multicentre trial, where 390 patients admitted to the stroke units at St. Olavs Hospital or Bærum Hospital are randomised into either an intervention group or into a control group three months after the stroke.
The intervention group will be followed up monthly by a coordinating physiotherapist (coach) who will motivate and facilitate a one-hour weekly exercise session in addition to 30 minutes of daily physical activity over an 18-month period. The control group will receive standard care as recommended by the national guidelines for treatment and rehabilitation after stroke.
Active collaboration partners are: Asker municipality, Bærum municipality, Trondheim municipality, Bærum Hospital, St. Olavs Hospital and the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences.
The study started in autumn 2011 and is financed by the Research Council of Norway, the Liaison Committee between the Central Norway Regional Health Authority and NTNU, and the Fund for Post-graduate Training in Physiotherapy.
Data collection will end in autumn 2015.
