CBS
Main objective
Investigate the relationship between brain circuits and clinical phenotypes.
About the CBS Group
The research group for Clinical Brain Systems (CBS) is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to bridge clinical practice with the study of neural circuits and networks, known as systems neuroscience. Extensive research has consistently shown that a majority of brain disorders are characterized by dysregulation patterns in neural systems, detectable through advanced neuroimaging and neurophysiological methods.
Consequently, our research focuses on these patterns to achieve the following objectives in selected brain disorders:
- unravel the pathophysiological dynamics of neural networks.
- identify novel diagnostic biomarkers.
- develop effective neuromodulatory treatments for medication-resistant symptoms.
At last, we have a particular interest in phylogenetically preserved neural circuits which provide an opportunity to leverage fine-grained animal functional neuroanatomical knowledge to study comparable human brain systems in health and diseases.
Methods
- structural, functional, and spectroscopic (ultra) high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS).
- neurophysiological recordings (e.g. EEG, DBS electrodes, and invasive micro-macro depth electrodes).
- advanced cognitive and behavioral assays.

Brain Circuits: Principles and Translational Applications
This episode of the eanCast Weekly Neurology series features Thanh Doan of the CBS research group. It takes us on a journey into brain circuits, explaining how understanding them could change the way we diagnose and treat neurological and psychiatric diseases, bringing us closer to personalized medicine.
