Task 3.4

Task 3.4 : Numerical model for the sediment erosion in the Francis turbine

The major objective of this project activity is to develop a numerical model for flow field analysis of the Francis turbine and its validation with experimental efficiency measurements from NTNU.

A numerical model will be developed for the computational domain of the variable speed Francis turbine design. The hexahedral mesh will be generated using ICEM. The numerical results for steady state operation of the turbine will be obtained for few operating points and compared with the experimental results (available hill chart from NTNU) for validation. After this validation, two-phase modelling of flow through the turbine for suspended solids will be performed using Eulerian-Lagrangian multiphase flow model.
