Steven A. Gabriel

Professor Steven A. Gabriel (SM’02, IEEE) received the B.A. degree in French with a concentration in applied mathematics from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, in 1977. He received the M.S. degree in operations research from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1984 and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematical sciences from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, in 1989 and 1992, respectively. He is currently a Full Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department as well as the Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Scientific Computation Program at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), in Trondheim, Norway as part of the Energy Transition Programme and is a regular visitor there on expert panels for energy transition issues. Also, Professor Gabriel is an Adjunct Professor at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland in the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis. He specializes in stochastic and deterministic optimization and equilibrium (e.g., game theory) modeling for infrastructure in such areas as energy, water, transport, and the environment. He also develops algorithmic methods to solve optimization and equilibrium programs, the latter using concepts from mixed complementarity problems (MCPs) and variational inequalities (VIs).
