Renewable Energy and Energy Markets
Workshop: Renewable Energy and Energy Markets
Watch the Live Stream at 9 AM
This workshop will focus on power generation, infrastructure, and market design in the Norwegian energy transition. In the Norwegian economy, the availability of clean power at competitive prices has played a major role in value creation. As electrification and decarbonization evolve, there is an increasing need for new power generation and further grid development. Hydropower, wind power, and PV are all part of the equation in a 10–15-year perspective.
Conflicts are emerging in society regarding the use of unspoiled nature, the distribution and welfare effects of power prices, and prioritization in scarcity situations. This workshop addresses the role of renewables and explores market design and tools to address welfare effects related to discussions on subsidies for consumers in end-use markets.
Agenda
09:00 – 10:00 | What Characterizes a Well-Functioning Power System and Market? Chair: Magnus Korpås How can we achieve a power system that ensures energy security, affordability, competitiveness, climate, and nature considerations? What challenges exist, and what role can renewable energy play as a key solution? What is the role of the market?
|
10:00 – 10:45 | Different Designs of End-User Subsidies in the Power Market Chair: Mette Bjørndal Is it possible to create end-user subsidies that ensure fair welfare distribution without hampering the efficiency of the power market?
|
10:45 – 11:15 | Break |
11:15 – 12:15 |
What Are the Main Challenges for the Coming Years? This session focuses on the measures and activities needed to scale up energy solutions. We consider costs, feasibility, technological alternatives, environmental impact, and just transition. Of particular interest is the interplay between different technologies and how they together ensure a robust and resilient power system.
