Conference of the Parties
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is a meeting of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is an international treaty signed by almost all countries in the world. The COP is held annually and is attended by representatives from all of the parties to the UNFCCC. Some facts about the COP include:
- The first COP was held in 1995 in Berlin, Germany.
- The main goal of the COP is to review and assess the implementation of the UNFCCC, which aims to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere in order to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
- The COP also serves as a forum for countries to negotiate and adopt decisions and agreements to address climate change.
- The COP has adopted several important agreements, including the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement, and the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol.
- The COP is organized and hosted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, which is based in Bonn, Germany.
- The COP is attended by thousands of people, including government officials, NGOs, experts, and media.
- The COP is often referred to as the "climate summit" or the "climate conference."
- The COP is held in different cities around the world, with the location rotating among different regions. The COP23 was held in Bonn, Germany, the COP24 was held in Katowice, Poland, and the COP25 was held in Madrid, Spain.
