Meron Tesfamichael is the Director of the WRI Africa Energy Program, leading efforts to expand access to sustainable energy and accelerate the clean energy transition across the continent. She oversees a portfolio of initiatives aimed at identifying sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy solutions while supporting countries in developing transition pathways that align with climate commitments and development priorities.
Meron has worked in energy research and policy for over a decade, previously serving as a Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer at University College London, where she focused on the intersection of energy transition and sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. She has led and managed projects on energy access, energy governance, just energy transition, and climate-compatible policies, working closely with public institutions and development partners to shape Africa’s energy strategies. Meron holds a doctoral degree in politics and actively contributes to regional and global energy dialogues, shaping governance and investment strategies for an equitable energy transition. She also serves on advisory boards and expert panels, advancing evidence-based decision-making to promote sustainable energy systems across Africa
