ISPRS Workshop on 3D Digital Modelling for SDGs

3D Digital Modelling for SDGs 2024 (ISPRS ICWG IV/III, ISPRS WG IV/11) is the international workshop for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 3D city models with detailed geometries with rich semantic and attribute information in urban area, often dealing with big geospatial data involving earth observations, is of high importance for applications in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) monitoring. Among others, 3D city models are essential data infrastructure in the applications such as resilient cities, solar cities, smart cities, affordable and clean energy, climate actions, and others. Aiming at providing such geospatial data, numerous algorithms, solutions, and frameworks have been developed in the recent years.

This workshop will be a small forum to have the most prominent international scholars to share their experiences in generating and modelling 3D city models and to discuss the future trend in this regard. Some of the themes the workshop addresses are:

  • Photo-realistic 3D city models vs. non-photo-realistic 3D city models
  • AI in smart cities for the purpose of SDGs
  • Semantic segmentation from image and point clouds data
  • CityGML ADEs (i.e. cultural heritage sites) for SDGs
  • Interoperability and visualization of 3D city models

3D Digital Modelling for SDGs 2024 is organized by the Geomatics Group, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway on July 07-10, 2024.

3dRGLm- China’s national Mapping 3D Program

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has vigorously promoted a comprehensive and in-depth change in production, living and governance of our society in the past years. Although the existing 2-2.5 D geospatial information continuously plays its important role, more and more 3D and real (or near-real) time geospatial data are required for developing vivid and dynamic applications and services for digital economy, digital life and digital governance.

Recently, China’s national mapping agency- the Ministry of Natural Resources has launched a national 3D mapping program aiming to build a 3d Realistic geospatial Landscape Model (3dRGLm) over the whole country. The 3dRGLM is a digital description and representation of the real 3D geospatial spaces, and is defined as a new generation geospatial data product with 3D structures, realistic scenes, and geospatial entities. Such a national 3dRGLm will covering both cities and countryside, and set up a digital 3D realistic geospatial space to facilitate the vital connection with the real geospatial space. It will serve as a new generation of geospatial information infrastructure for next decades.

The 3dRGLM development is becoming a major and challenging task for national and local basic surveying and mapping agencies nowadays. This presentation will introduce and discuss the motivation and progress of China’s 3dRGlM program, including its background and objectives, conceptual model and technical framework, technical and institutional challenges, as well as the current research activities and engineering engagements.

Jun Chen is leading scientist affiliated with National Geomatics Center of China. He had led the development of open access of the world’s first 30-m earth land cover map and established a dynamic topographic updating system for produced accurate 1:50,000 digital maps for the whole of China. He had also completed a pioneer case study to measure the overall progress toward 2030 SDGs at a local county in China with geospatial and statistical information, which was recognized by UNDESA as one of the first 16 good SDGs practices in 2020. He is now leading the expert group for 3dRGLM of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. He served as the president of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and Chinese Association of GISs. He had published more than 300 publications and 4 books, and received a number of international and national scientific awards. He is academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, honorary member of ISPRS, and fellow of International Scientific Council (ISC).

Trondheim lies on the central part of Norway, the south shore of Trondheim Fjord at the mouth of the River Nidelva. In Norway, Trondheim is the third largest city, a Tech & Knowledge hub and the home of Nordic flavours with unforgettable scenes.

As the home of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the largest university of Norway, Trondheim is bustling with youth and fresh ideas, a booming tech community, and cutting edge start-up incubators and coworking spaces. In the central area of Trondheim, The famed Nidaros Cathedral is world’s Northernmost Gothic cathedral and bears witness the rich history of the 11th century. In the north and west of Trondheim, the amazing mountains and forests in Bymarka and the beautiful Trondheim fjord provide a good place for hiking, biking and fishing in summer.

In 2019, Trondheim was named a UN Center of Excellence (CoE) due to the city’s efforts working towards a sustainable future. This means that the UN has officially recognised Trondheim as being on the forefront in its work towards reaching the 17 sustainability goals that the organisation has set for future development.
