About research in RAMS group

About research in RAMS group

Our contribution is made by providing RAMS research and education at the highest possible level of quality.

In the next coming years, we plan to move from traditional RAMS analysis domain to the broader perspective of performance engineering of complex technical and sociotechnical systems.

Performance engineering encompasses the set of roles, skills, activities, practices, tools, and deliverables, applied at every phase of the systems development life cycle, to ensure that a system at all times achieves the specified performance. In the design phase (including associated stages before system is put into operation), the main focus of performance engineering is on building confidence to the selected design solutions and the preparation of operation and maintenance strategies.  In the operational phase, the focus is mainly directed to decision-making needed to maintain the specified performance, within the constraints of resources, costs and safety.

We have identified four major challenges in the design and operation of complex technical and sociotechnical systems, in which RAMS and performance engineering is of specific interest:

  • Challenge 1: Engineer performance of cyber-physical systems.
  • Challenge 2: Engineer performance of digitized production and manufacturing processes.
  • Challenge 3: Deploy performance engineering in the extended enterprise.
  • Challenge 4: Engineer long-term performance of critical infrastructures.

An important fundament in our research is analysis based on models, where models can be mathematical, statistical distributions, algorithms for e.g. machine learning and problem solving, and management and decision process models.
