“MeTinT” which stands for “measurements from trains in traffic”—is a joint initiative between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Norwegian Railway Directorate. The project aims to continuously monitor the condition of railway infrastructures (such as the catenary system and rails) and detect defects using data collected from the measurement system installed on passenger trains in regular service, thereby facilitating a shift from traditional corrective maintenance to predictive maintenance. In this project, an electric multiple unit (EMU) train is instrumented with the measurement system. The trainset is instrumented with accelerometers and force sensors on the pantograph, accelerometers and strain sensors on the bogies, and a microphone in carbody.
With advanced data analysis techniques, we are able to know the train state on a daily basis, and determine the existence of the defects and precisely locate it. this is validated by the test campaign where artificial defects are introduced and the system can detect the defects successfully.
