Second and Third Language Research Group – FANT
FANT consists of three researchers with PhDs in second and/or third language acquisition, in Norwegian, English and French, respectively. We have expertise in the acquisition of additional languages in children and adults, covering both in immersion and non-immersion contexts.
The group is currently working on a large project investigating the acquisition of syntactic structure and word order in a third language using experimental methods.
The researchers are also members of AcqVA, and all are affiliated with the Trondheim branch of Bilingualism Matters, Flere språk til flere Trondheim.

Course description
The course offers an introduction to second and third language learning in the Scandinavian context. Focus will be on the grammatical development of second and third languages both from a descriptive and a theoretical point of view. Factors that are commonly considered to influence that development, e.g., the structural similarity between source and target language or individual factors, such as the effects of the age of acquisition will be discussed. Traditionally, in second language acquisition research, no particular interest has been shown for the role of other background languages than the learners mother tongue or first language (L1). Recently, the study of the L3 has developed into a rapidly growing field and the potential influence of previously acquired or learned languages in the initial stages is currently hotly debated. What drives and conditions L3 development is also a matter in focus.

Course Description
This course will place the linguistic environment (also known as comprehensible input, positive evidence, naturalistic input) at the heart of language acquisition. For statistical learning approaches to language acquisition (such as connectionism, emergentism), input is either the only (truly linguistic) condition for language acquisition or by far the most essential. For generative approaches, it is a necessary, but crucially not an isolated sufficient condition. In this course, we will describe how input interacts with other factors, such as Universal Grammar, the social milieu, effects from previous language transfer/cross-linguistic influence and teaching, in language development.
