Sandvik, H., et al. 2016. Modelled drift patterns of fish larvae link coastal morphology to seabird colony distribution. Nature Communications, 7, art.nr. 11599
This paper provide evidence for that the distribution of seabird colonies along the Norwegian coast is explained by variations in the availability and predictability of fish larvae. The findings illustrate how animals cope with environmental stochasticity by choosing breeding sites that maximise the long-term predictability of resources, and shows how small-scale spatio-temporal variation is translated into a macroecological pattern.
Sæther, B.-E. et al. 2016. Demographic routes to variability and regulation in bird populations. Nature Communications 7, art.nr 12001.
This paper provides strong support for Lack's hypothesis for regulation and limitation of the size of populations. Regulation of population size towards the carrying capacity occurs by increased density-dependent mortality mainly during the non-breeding season. Thus, at small population sizes avian population fluctuations are caused mainly by environmentally-driven variation in fecundity whereas differences in survival are the key demographic driver of population variability around the carrying capacity.
