PhD in Energy and Process Engineering

About the programme

A candidature in the doctoral programme for Energy and Process Engineering is typically 3 years of full-time study and research totalling 180 credits. Admission occurs on a continuous basis, and typically in conjunction with an open fellowship position.

The topic of one's doctoral thesis will normally be tied to R&D projects that are being carried out in the department or within the associated research groups. The particulars of the thesis and research plan will be developed in concert with the candidate, their advisor, and the host department.

Research fields

The department's research and development work is strongly linked with our partner's in industry and can be grouped into four main categories:

  • Thermal Energy
  • Industrial Process Technology
  • Energy and Indoor Environment
  • Fluid Mechanics

The department of energy and process engineering currently has over 6000m2 of laboratory space, and access to high performance computing capacity both through local installations as well as NTNU´s supercomputing facilities. Potential topic areas for doctoral theses may be related to, for example:

Area 1: Thermal Energy

  • Thermal turbo machinery
  • Gasworks
  • Combustion
  • High-temperature fuel cells
  • Bioenergy
  • Energy management, simulation and modelling
  • Heat and mass transport
  • New energy souces and systems
  • Airpolution and CO2 capture

Area 2: Industrial Process Technology

  • Heat- and refrigeration technology, components and systems
  • Refrigeration and heat pump technology technology
  • LNG, transport and processing
  • Multiphase flow technology
  • Energy ananlysis and systems engineering
  • Process Integration
  • Low temperature process technology
  • Food processing technology (dewatering, cooling, defrosting, fluidized systems)

Area 3: Energy and Indoor Environment

  • Heating and energy systems
  • Waterborne heating / heating from central heating-plants
  • Energy consumption and energy planning
  • Central operational control and simulation
  • Administration, operation, maintenance and development (FDVU)
  • Ventilation technology for industrial applications
  • Fire and safety
  • Sanitation and residential hygiene

Area 4: Fluid Mechanics

  • Hydraulic turbo machines
  • Fluid power and pneumatic
  • Aero- and gas dynamics
  • Multiphase flows
  • Micro-fluid dynamics
  • Numerical flow calculations
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Turbulence physics
