Programme structure

Design of services, technology and interaction is a session-based master's that can be taken full-time over two years or part-time over four years. The sessions take place physically at NTNU in Gjøvik and will amount to up to 15 days per semester for full-time studies.

The programme consists of 120 credits distributed between the following courses:

Full time:

1st semester

  • Design for change 1 (15 credits)
  • Research method (7.5 credits)
  • Top up elective course (7.5 credits)

2nd semester

  • Design for change 2 (15 credits)
  • Experts in Team (7.5 credits)
  • Elective course (7.5 credits)

3rd semester

  • Design for/in/with technological change (7.5 credits)
  • Project specialization in research groups (7.5 credits)
  • Project management and design management (7.5 credits)
  • Elective course (7.5 credits)

4th semester

  • Master's thesis (30 credits)

Part time:  

1st semester

  • Design for change 1, part 1 (7.5 credits)
  • Elective subject (7.5 credits)

2nd semester

  • Design for change 2 (15 credits)

3rd semester

  • Research method (7.5 credits)
  • Design for change 1, part 2 (7.5 credits)

4th semester

  • Experts in Team (7.5 credits)
  • Elective course (7.5 credits)

5th semester

  • Design for/in/with technological change (7.5 credits)
  • Elective course (7.5 credits)

6th semester

  • Project specialization in research groups (7.5 credits)

7th semester

  • Master's thesis
  • Project management and design management (7.5 credits)

8th semester

  • Master's thesis cont. (30 credits)

Study tour

In the 2nd semester, a voluntary excursion will be organized where the aim is to get inspiration from the best design projects in Norway and to establish networks within the design and architecture industry in Norway.

Exchange studies

The Department of Design has several exchange agreements with universities in Europe, including Politecnico di Milano in Italy, Universiteit Antwerpen in Belgium, Technishe Hochschule Köln in Germany and Universität für angewandte Kunst in Vienna, Austria.
