Exceptions
Exceptions
The following groups of applicants must abide by certain exceptions to procedures or course selection
Engineering courses taught in English at the bachelor's level can be hard to find at NTNU in Trondheim.
It is therefore recommended that students have completed at least three years of a bachelor's degree if they wish to apply for master's level courses. Wihtin engineering, NTNU normally cannot offer supervision of any bachelor's thesis work, unless the agreement between NTNU and your institution specifically says so.
All
Students within Fine Art, Performance, Design or Architecture, who would like to participate in the studio-based courses (15 ECTS) at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, must submit a portfolio.
Students must have completed 180 ECTS if they wish to apply for master's level courses within these subjects.
Architecture
Within architecture, only master's level courses are offered in English. No supervision of bachelor's theses is offered. In order to apply for exchange to NTNU as an architecture student, the institutional exchange agreement must cover architecture specifically. Nominated students can not choose courses upon applying, but will receive a list of available courses from NTNU.
Music performance
Students at Music Performance studies at AEC member institutions may apply for exchange to NTNU's "Performing Arts - Music" program. Students must apply by 1 April / 1 October and follow a separate application procedure found on this page.
All academic bilateral cooperation between Norway and Russia has been suspended by Norwegian authorities due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As a result, NTNU is unable to accept exchange students from Russian institutions.
The Russian-Norwegian Scholarship Sceme is also suspended, and thus unavailable.
Russian citizens are still eligible to apply for degrees at NTNU as usual.
Through an Erasmus+/Nordplus exchange agreement with NTNU, students may apply for exchange to UNIS in Svalbard. For this, separate application procedures apply.
It is possible to come to NTNU as a Placement student in order to do a project, thesis, internship or practical placement, within or outside the regular semester dates.
Placement students are exchange students, but must also complete some additional steps in order to apply for placement at NTNU. Follow the link below for more information.
Admission requirements
Admission requirements
Exchange students from partner universities do not pay tuition at NTNU, and don't need to provide proof of their financing as part of their application to NTNU.
However, in order to obtain a student visa, applicants from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA will be required to prove to the Directorate for Immigration (UDI) that they can support themselves during their stay - instructions on how to do this will be provided when you are accepted to NTNU.
NTNU requires all international students to have a good command of English at an academic level and you may need to provide TOEFL/IELTS test scores. If you wish to take courses taught in Norwegian, you will have to document Norwegian proficiency.
Exchange students from the EU/EAA
There are no formal language requirements for students from EU/EEA countries, and these students do not need to document English proficiency. However, NTNU expects students to command the English language at a minimum of B2, preferably C1, level using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages scale.
Students exchanging to NTNU via the Erasmus+ programme do not need to document English proficiency.
Exchange students from outside the EU/EEA
Non-EU/EEA students are required to document their English proficiency by one of these means:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 90 points on the internet based test
- IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) with a minimum overall band score of 6.5
Students exchanging to NTNU via the Erasmus+ programme do not need to document English proficiency
NTNU do not accept free movers.
In order to apply for an exchange at NTNU, there needs to be an exchange agreement between your home institution and NTNU.
Application procedures
Application procedures
Step 1: Find courses
You should decide which courses you want to take at NTNU before starting your application.
Students are responsible for ensuring that they meet the requirements for any courses they wish to take. Please read the course descriptions carefully to make sure that you comply. Students who do not fulfil the requirements may be denied admission to the course.
PhD level courses are usually reserved for PhD candidates and require special admission.
Step 2: Apply online through Søknadsweb
Step 2: Apply online and upload required documentation
You apply through NTNU's online portal Søknadsweb.
Only applications that are complete within the deadline will be considered.

Once you have been formally nominated, you will receive an e-mail with complete instructions on how to apply. Follow the instructions in the e-mail carefully.
Please note that there is no "submit button" in Søknadsweb. Your application is saved automatically.

Step 3: Learning Agreements
Step 3: Learning Agreements
Learning Agreement (LA)
A Learning Agreement (LA) is a three-way agreement between you, your home institution and the receiving institution (NTNU) about the planned learning outcome/academic contents of your exchange.
The LA specifies which courses you will be taking at NTNU and, when signed by all three parties, it:
- Verifies that your home institution will accept the chosen courses (or professional practice) as part of your degree, replacing equivalent academic work you would usually have done at the home institution.
- Verifies that NTNU has approved the chosen courses/activities and will grant you credits for them.
Learning agreements can only be sent to NTNU, and signed, after receiving admission NTNU. Incorrectly filled learning agreements may be rejected.
To find out whether you should submit an LA or OLA, contact your home institution. You can submit one or the other, not both.
An Online Learning Agreement (OLA) is a Learning Agreement that is submitted through a dedicated online mobility portal, instead of sending it as a PDF. Many institutions use this system, which allows you to log in to a dedicated portal to send, change, and see the status of your Learning Agreement at any time.
To find out whether you should submit an LA or OLA, contact your home institution. You can submit one or the other, not both.
If you will be submitting an OLA, see specific instructions below.
Read here for a step-by-step instruction on how to correctly fill out your learning agreement.
In your application to NTNU, you have chosen a number of courses. Changes can be made later, but no changes or additional courses will be processed until the semester begins.
You may not send the Learning Agreement before you have received an offer of admission to NTNU by e-mail. NTNU strives to sign Learning Agreements as soon as possible, but we cannot guarantee accommodation of internal deadlines at your home institution.
Before submitting your LA/OLA to NTNU, for your own convenience, please ensure that your home university has pre-approved your selection of courses.
- Please note that OLAs containing the course (“Norwegian for Foreigners”) cannot be approved until mid-August. If you plan to take one of these courses during your stay, you must therefore wait with submitting your OLA. Otherwise, it will be rejected.
If you have not had all the courses approved by NTNU yet, we strongly recommend that you wait to submit your LA/OLA until after your arrival in Norway or after 15 September.
- Online Learning Agreements (OLAs) can only be signed if:
- All your planned courses have been pre-approved during the admission process.
OR - You have sent the approval of your newly chosen courses from the relevant department/faculty to exchange@st.ntnu.no
- All your planned courses have been pre-approved during the admission process.
- If your courses have not been approved by NTNU yet, but your home institution requires a preliminary LA before you arrive in Norway, please send us your LA as a pdf-file per email (find the correct address below). This enables us to sign the document as a preliminary LA with certain reservations.
How to send the Agreement
- Send your Learning Agreement in a single pdf file to the correct address below, depending on where you will be studying:
- NTNU Trondheim: exchange@st.ntnu.no
- NTNU Gjøvik: international@gjovik.ntnu.no
- NTNU Ålesund: au@ntnu.no
- The Responsible person at the receiving institution is the person you received your offer of admission from.
- NTNU's Erasmus+ code is N TRONDHE 01.
If you need to make changes to your signed LA, you can do so by submitting the During the mobility section (Part 2) of your LA.
Changes will be signed, on the following conditions:
- Any new courses with restricted access require approval from the course coordinator or relevant department administration
- The "During the mobility" part of the LA will only be signed after the semester deadline:
- 15 September (autumn semester)
- 1 February (spring semester)
- The "During the mobility" part will only be signed once, so you should send it only when your course selection is final
Step 4: During and after your stay
Step 4: During and after your stay
During and after your stay
When your exchange at NTNU ends, you will automatically receive a Departure Confirmation (DC) that documents your exchange period at NTNU.
You can order, and send, your transcript of records from NTNU via our intraweb, Innsida: order transcript of records
Those two documents cover all the information requested in the "After the Mobility" part of your Learning Agreement. For that reason, NTNU does not sign this part. This is also customary at most of our partner institutions, and is generally accepted. If your home institution takes issue with this, they must contact NTNU directly.
Students from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA must document their ability to support themselves during their stay in Norway. This is a requirement from the Norwegian Directorate for Immigration.
This is done by depositing funds to an NTNU deposit account.
You get access to these funds in the beginning of the semester through a cash card issued by the Office of International Relations.
The card is a debit card that will only work in Norway (not online). It can be used to pay your rent at the Student Welfare Organization (Sit) if you are living in Sit housing.
Any funds remaining on the card will be transferred back to you after your exchange at NTNU.
Students staying for only one semester receive their entire deposit on the cash card. Students staying for two semesters will be able to open a Norwegian bank account to which the funds from the deposit account (not cash card) can be transferred.
Information about the practicalities of transferring funds to the deposit account will be provided in the admission letter from NTNU.
If you wish to extend your stay long than originally planned, you must apply for an extension by:
- 1 November for the spring semester
- 1 May for the autumn semester
Read the procedures for applying for an extension here.
