Title: Harness the Power of Digital Learning
Speaker: Robin Støckert
In 2020, pivoting to remote learning became an immediate necessity, rather than an option for businesses and academia, globally. The need to keep students and staff engaged in the learning experience increased the roll-out of existing tools and drove the adoption of new ones. In 2021, the demand for new interactive technologies will continue to surge. The field is fast developing and shows no signs of slowing down. We examine the technologies boosting learning experiences and the issues around their successful deployment. We bring together corporates, AV providers, integrators, futurists and educators for a rounded conversation on the future of digital learning.
First on the agenda is the highly anticipated ISE Reporter Roundtable. International industry experts including Varun Sawhney - Netflix, Elizabeth Lembke - TRANSFORMING TALENT, Diana Laurillard - UCL Institute of Education and Robin Støckert - Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU)

Title: Autoscale: Automatic and Dynamic Scale Selection for Live Jazz Improvisation
Speaker: Thibault Jaccard
We are proud to announce that one of our students at MCT, Thibault Jaccard, is presenting his paper at NIME. He will present AutoScale, an interactive software for making jazz improvisation more accessible by lifting the burden of scale selection from the musician while still allowing full controllability if desired. This is realized by implementing a MIDI effect that dynamically maps the desired scales onto a standardized layout. Scale selection can be pre-programmed, automated based on algorithmic lead sheet analysis, or interactively adapted.
He will discuss the music-theoretical foundations underlying the approach, the design choices taken for building an intuitive user interface, and provide implementations as VST plugin and web applications for use with a Launchpad or traditional MIDI keyboard.

Title: Facilitating Team-Based Programming Learning with Web Audio
Speaker: Anna Xambó
Abstract: In our paper, we presented a course of audio programming using web audio technologies addressed to an interdisciplinary group of master students who are mostly novices in programming. This course is held in two connected university campuses through a portal space and the students are expected to work in cross-campus teams. The course promotes both individual and group work and is based on ideas from science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education, team-based learning (TBL) and project-based learning. We show the outcomes of this course, discuss the students’ feedback and reflect on the results.
We found that it is important to provide individual vs. group work, to use the same code editor for consistent follow-up and to be able to share the screen to solve individual questions. Other aspects inherent to the master (e.g. intensity of the courses, coding in a research-oriented program) and to prior knowledge (e.g. web technologies) should be reconsidered. We conclude with a wider reflection on the challenges and potentials of using web audio as a programming environment for novices in TBL cross-campus courses and how to foster effective novices.
We are proud to announce that Anna received a "Best Paper Award Certificate" for our paper.
Place: USN, Drammen, October 22, 2019.

Title: A case study in learning spaces for physical-virtual two-campus interaction.
Speaker: Robin Støckert
Abstract:
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Teaching Excellence is an integrated and wide-ranging initiative aimed at helping NTNU to achieve its goal to providing education characterized by quality at a high international level. The initiative consists of a portfolio of development measures, with the purpose to develop innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment.
SALTO (Student Active Learning in a Two campus Organization) is one of the development projects founded for the period 2018-2020. The project is based on a study where the students are divided into two campuses. The aim is to develop effective pedagogy with activity at both ca the same time, with a particular emphasis on interaction, resource sharing, communication and collmpuses ataboration. The project aims to allow students and teachers to explore educational, methodological, and technological solutions together. A new joint master’s program in “Music, Communication and Technology” (MCT) between NTNU and University in Oslo (UiO), constitutes the framework for the SALTO project. The common pedagogy, technology and shared learning space between the two Universities, is hereafter defined as the Portal. (Photo Inger Langseth)
SALTO will utilize the MCT Portal as an arena/living lab to evolve and optimize student active learning scenarios. In this paper, we elaborate on the issues, challenges and potential with three different scenarios, which emerged during the first 6 months of the project:
1) The Opening Ceremony between NTNU and UiO, with a combo of talks and performance.
2) A live Christmas concert connecting two high schools 500 km apart (Trondheim-Oslo).
3) An intense cross-university course with a combo of preparations, lectures and hands-on exercises.

Title: Finding general guidelines for redesign of learning spaces
Speaker: Robin Støckert
The purpose of the annual international scientific conference is to enable the academia, research and corporate entities to boost the potential of the technology enhanced learning environments, by providing a forum for exchange of ideas, research outcomes, business case and technical achievements. The main topic of this year conference was:
New technologies and redesigning learning spaces.
The main topic represents some of the key elements in the development of MCT and SALTO as well as challenges to be considered in conjuction with development of the new campus at NTNU.
Hence, members of the external advisory board of SALTO (Piet van der Zanden and Duncan Peberdy) suggested to co-write a paper together with Robin Støckert. The paper presents alternative approaches in the design of new learning spaces, with examples from NTNU(Campus development), TU Delft (Cookbook Education Spaces) and JISC (Sticky Campus).

Title: Networked music performance and education: NTNU and UiO are teaming up
Speaker: Sigurd Saue
The talk presented research activity on networked music performance and education at the Norwegian University og Science and Technology (NTNU). In particular we argued that musical interaction is an extreme application for high-speed and high-quality networks, and may become the most important testbed and showcase for the network solutions of the future. Finally we presented a new joint master's programme launched by NTNU and the University of Oslo (UiO) that extends these ideas into a wider societal context.
