The Norwegian Centre for Transmission Electron Microscopy (NORTEM) is a nationally coordinated initiative by the two leading Norwegian TEM groups within the physical sciences.

The NORTEM consortium is a world class infrastructure for TEMs and are established taking full advantage of recent technical developments. The microscopes cover a broad range of techniques and access levels.

NORTEM is a large scale infrastructure project supported by the Norwegian research council. The NORTEM consortium has two geographic nodes, one in Trondheim and the other in Oslo. The three partners of NORTEM are SINTEF, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the University of Oslo (UiO).

NORTEM II was granted in 2022 and two new microscopes were ordered from JEOL in 2023. The Trondheim node will receive a JEOL GRAND ARM 2, which will be operative in autumn 2025. The Oslo node will get a monochromated JEOL NEOARM in 2026.
