Private housing

Due to limited availability, not all international students will receive a housing offer from Sit. Only students from certain categories are guaranteed Sit housing.

 Who is guaranteed Sit housing

In the Autumn semester, students who are not guaranteed Sit housing most likely have to find private housing. If you intend to apply to one of the private student villages, we recommend applying before July to improve your chances of getting an offer.

In the Spring semester, almost all (including those who are not guaranteed Sit housing) will receive an offer from Sit.

 Avoid being scammed

You should check out the Norwegian Consumer Council's standard housing contract as a template for what a housing rental contract in Norway should look like and what should, and should not, be included/stipulated in the contract.

Please be extra wary of housing offers/ads in social media groups. NTNU is aware of several facebook groups in which attempts are made to scam international students with false offers of cheap housing or events. Read more here.

Please keep this list of ‘red flags’ in mind to avoid being scammed by false landlords. Be suspicious if:

  1. The landlord says he is staying abroad for the moment and asks you to send the money to a foreign account.
  2. The landlord says she cannot show you the room/apartment, but the key will be sent to you once the deposit is transferred.
  3. The landlord asks for your credit card number.
  4. The rental is considerably lower than for a similar apartments/room in the same area
  5. The landlord requests the security deposit exceed 6 months rent - this is illegal.
  6. The landlord requests the security deposit transferred to his/her private account - this is illegal. The deposit must be in a special shared account - read more about security deposits here. Do not transfer your deposit into a private bank account.
  7. Never give your credit card number to anyone through email, phone or any other way.
  8. Try finding the house on Google Maps. The house in the map should match the pictures in the advertisement. If the house does not appear or another house is shown, the advertisement could be false.
  9. Keep in mind: If something seems too good to be true – it usually is!
