Student housing - Trondheim
Sit student housing
Sit student housing
Most student villages in Trondheim are owned an operated by the Student Welfare Organization (Sit). NTNU owns no student housing.
In Trondheim, the NTNU Unit for International Relations is responsible for allocating the available Sit student housing to our international students. If you are eligible for student housing, Sit will contact you directly.
Not all students are eligible for Sit student housing, and few are guaranteed an offer. See below to check who is eligible. Note that while certain groups are guaranteed an offer of housing from Sit, those who are not may also still receive an offer.
Who is eligible for Sit housing?
Who is eligible for Sit housing?
Most international students are usually allocated Sit student housing in the spring semester. That does not mean all students are guaranteed Sit housing.
The only students guaranteed housing at Sit in the spring semester are students from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA, and non-Nordic students admitted to an international master's degree at NTNU.
In the autumn semester, there is not enough student housing to accommodate everyone. Some students will therefore have to find private housing on their own.
The following students are guaranteed an offer of Sit student housing:
- Students from countries outside Europe (EU/EEA/EFTA)
- Students admitted to an International master's degree at NTNU (except Nordic citizens)
- Students attending an Erasmus Mundus and Joint Nordic Master's at NTNU
The following students will not be considered for Sit student housing, and will receive no offer:
- Students from the Nordic countries
- Master´s degree students already living in Norway at the time of application
Other students may or may not receive an offer.
In general, short term contracts are not offered in the autumn semester.
Housing
Type of rooms
The majority of students will be placed at Moholt Student Village, which is the only student village with furnished rooms (some other student villages have partially furnished rooms, some non-furnished).
Standard rooms are single rooms in a shared apartment (shared living room, kitchen and bathrooms). There is normally a long waiting list for couples' or family accommodation.
The cheapest single rooms start at about NOK 4 300,- plus utilities. On average, you should expect to budget for at least NOK 5 500,- per month for rent and utilities.
Note that the state of furnishing varies between the different rooms - check the inventory list to see what your room includes!
Shared housing
Sit housing is co-habitation housing, and roommates are automatically assigned based on housing availability. You are not able to choose who to live with, and will have to share an apartment with whomever else is assigned it.
This means you may be living with persons of different gender, nationality, ethnicity, beliefs, etc. Requests to be housed with specific (groups of) people will not be heeded. If this is not acceptable to you, you will have to turn down your offer of Sit housing and find private housing.
How to book a room
If you are allocated Sit student housing, you will receive information and a booking code from Sit to book your student housing. This information will be sent to you by email around: May/June (Autumn semester) or November/December (Spring semester).
You must book your room at Sit with the same name and e-mail address with which you applied to NTNU.
Housing contract and start date
After you have received a booking code from Sit and booked a room, you will receive a housing contract immediately. All the essential housing information will be included in the contract.
You will have to pay rent from the starting date stated in the contract. If your arrival is later than the starting date, you will still need to pay rent from the starting date of the contract. The housing contract for the autumn term usually starts in July/August. If you arrive before your housing contract starts, you should look into temporary housing.
