x-in-the-loop-xil-testing-platform-for-a-complex-marine-system-development

Background: When developing a complex engineering system such as a hybrid propulsion/power system, it is important that the components and the system are tested thoroughly from the beginning of the design cycle. In an early stage, the design can be tested using models that represent the components and the system such as model-in-the-loop (MiL) testing.  As the product is developed, the models are replaced by more detailed models, software and hardware for the test such as software-in-the-loop (SiL) testing and hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) testing. This continuous testing of a system using models, software and hardware is referred as X-in-the-loop (XiL) testing.

Objective: In the project, XiL concept will be developed and applied for the hybrid power system laboratory. Specifically, a new industrial standard called Distributed Co-simulation Protocol (DCP) will be implemented and tested in order to interface simulation models and hardware seamlessly. The target system for testing is a hybrid power system with DC grid, energy storage system and possibly fuel cells. An integrated dynamic test will be performed in MiL, SiL and HiL for verification of the platform developed.
