As Norway's third largest city, Trondheim is a vibrant place to be, with lots to see and do. Trondheim was founded way back in 997 AD as a Viking trading post. It even briefly served as the capital of Norway. Later on, during the Middle Ages, when the city was known as Nidaros, it was the seat of the Archdiocese and Northern Europe's most important Christian pilgrimage site. Even though wars and fire ravaged this medieval city in the 17th century, thankfully a number of relics survived to this day, including the imposing and richly decorated Nidaros Cathedral – one of the city's most important attractions.
Trondheim has established itself as a centre of innovation and is known as Norway's knowledge capital. This is partly thanks to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the country's largest university.
