Differentiated integration

About the project

Differentiated integration: The Norwegian case in perspective exposes students, academics, practitioners and the public to up-to-date research on relations between the EU and third countries.

European integration is no longer a question of EU membership or not. As a result of the EU’s deepening and widening, differentiated integration has become a key feature. Together EU member-states, associates, candidates and neighbours form a multi-speed and multi-membership entity. In light of the British Leave vote and a certain enlargement fatigue, this is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. Against this backdrop, and with the Norwegian case as a point of departure, this Jean Monnet module offers in-depth knowledge of and critical perspectives on the manifold forms and degrees of present-day differentiated integration.

The module brings to light the multiple, variegated and frequently overlooked ways in which the EU allows for cooperation between countries whether or not they are member states. It enhances the professional applicability of European studies and facilitates bridging the gap between academics, practitioners and the public.

The module offers a series of thematic sessions informed by state-of-the-art research and mixed, student-centred learning methods, a strong focus on applied assignments and the co-creation of learning and, finally, a public interaction strategy that particularly targets young citizens in Norway and abroad. The main outputs include skype talks with students in other non-EU member states as well as a moderated YouTube-channel where the number of viewings and comments will provide an indication of the module’s outreach.
