AIDEAL – AI Billion Center • 6 new research projects • BRU21 Conference

Dear BRU21 friends,

This year has been full of research, innovations, collaborations, and events. We are grateful to our team members, partner companies, and everyone who supported us and contributed to BRU21.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Before the end of this year, we are excited to share some of the news and accomplishments from 2024.

AIdeal – AI Billion Center

AIdeal – AI Billion Center

In 2024, BRU21 teamed up with SINTEF Energy and other partners to establish AIdeal - an AI research center for the NFR’s AI Billion call. AIdeal focuses on developing Artificial Intelligence applications for engineering and operations for critical processes and systems within the Ocean and Energy sectors.

BRU21 Research: 6 new projects

BRU21 Research: 6 new projects

We enter 2025 with six new projects started in 2024.

Portfolio optimization of offshore energy investment projects under uncertainty

Alessandro Limonta’s research project focuses on advancing economic analysis methodologies for complex offshore energy infrastructures. Ultimately, his work aims to enhance decision-making processes for the dynamic management of energy asset portfolios. Supervisor: Verena Hagspiel. The project is sponsored by OKEA.

Smart solutions for field development planning optimization

In this project, Kheireddine Redouane develops an advanced optimization procedure that will serve as an independent 3rd party decision-support and verification tool (the “challenger”) to quickly improve or test the optimality of a field development planning scenario under technical, economic, and environmental constraints. Supervisor: Ashkan Jahanbani. The project is sponsored by EU.

Integrated energy management for an offshore production platform

Kang Qiu is a PhD candidate at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics who will focus on the optimal control of offshore energy systems. It is related to electrification and introduction of renewable energy sources on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Supervisor: Lars Imsland. The project is sponsored by OKEA.

Detection of hard stringers with acoustic look-ahead

In his PhD project, Saygin Ileri focuses on the problem of predicting hard stringers ahead of the drilling bit. Hard stringers are hard to identify from seismic data, yet they can cause significant operational challenges. Saygin developes acoustic methods enabled by Machine Learning that would allow one to detect hard stringers ahead of the drilling bit. Supervisor: Alexey Pavlov. The project is funded by AkerBP.

Data-driven optimization of industrial processes in time-varying environments

Leontine Aarnoudse does her Postdoc in the Extreme Efficiency project. She focuses on developing efficient data-driven optimization methods for the process industry and beyond. These methods represent a class of non-greedy machine learning algorithms with high data efficiency. Supervisors: Alexey Pavlov and Mark Haring (Sintef Digital). The project is a collaboration with SINTEF Digital and is funded through the FRIPRO program by The Research Council of Norway.

Sensor Technology and AI for Occupational Health Monitoring and Resource Management

Roya Doshmanziari's research project focuses on utilizing innovative sensor technologies and AI to enhance occupational health and safety. The ultimate goal is to reduce work-related illnesses, improve occupational health and safety standards, increase productivity and heighten morale. Supervisor: Damiano Varagnolo. The project is funded by Aker Solutions AS and Norsk Industri.

BRU21 Conference 2024

BRU21 Conference

The annual BRU21 conference is an arena for academic and industrial experts to share their latest research results and discuss future research directions for the offshore energy industry. Its slogan is Important, Innovative, Interesting, Inspiring.

In 2024, the BRU21 Conference experienced record growth, bringing together 28 companies and 114 experts, representing startups, major industry players and research institutions. You can watch video from the conference here and check photos here.
