Artistic Research

NTNU’s artistic research refers to the research aspect of our artistic work.

At NTNU, we include both artistic research and arts-based research, along with scientific research that looks at art from an external perspective. In artistic research, the focus is on researching in and through art, where the artist and the researcher are often the same person.

NTNU explores and develops both traditional and modern art forms. We also offer a PhD program in artistic research.

Strong Growth Nationally and Internationally

Strong Growth Nationally and Internationally

Artistic research is a rapidly growing field and is becoming increasingly relevant both in Norway and internationally. In Norwegian law, artistic research is given the same status as scientific research.

Horizon Europe is focusing on culture, creativity, and an inclusive society, while the New European Bauhaus initiative is shaping the agenda in this area. The EU is now recognizing the need to build bridges between science, technology, art, and culture. Green culture and digital solutions may be key to solving complex societal challenges through collaboration, and NTNU will be an important partner and contributor in this effort.
