nullSFI PhysMet contributions and award at International Conference on Processing and Manufacturing of Advanced Materials
The 12th International Conference on Processing & Manufacturing of Advanced Materials Thermec’2023, was organized in Vienna, Austria, July 2 - 7. The Thermec conference provides a forum that connects professionals (engineers, technologists, researchers) working in industry, academia and government research labs from around the world to present their research findings in the overall field of science and technology of processing, fabrication and manufacturing of advanced materials.
More than 1100 participants attended Thermec’2023 in Vienna. SFI PhysMet was represented by Professor Randi Holmestad who gave an invited presentation on Advanced TEM studies of precipitation in (deformed) aluminium alloys and center manager Professor Knut Marthinsen, who also gave an invited talk with the title: Correlated subgrain and particle analysis in scanning electron microscopy and its influence on the recovery and recrystallization behaviour of an AlMn alloy.
Distinguished award to Professor Marthinsen
At the conference dinner, Knut Marthinsen (as well as several other colleagues from around world) received the THERMEC’2023 Distinguished Award: For outstanding contributions in the area of physical metallurgy of aluminium alloys & for national and international leadership in the field of materials science and engineering.
Knut Marthinsen received the award from Prof. Christophe Sommitch, Graz Univ. of Technology and Chairman of the Thermec’2023 Committee.
Parallel conference: The first FORUM Aluminium Conference
In parallel with Thermec’2023 the first FORUM Aluminium Conference was organized 4-6 July 2023, in St. Pölten, Austria. The conference was organized by Neuman Aluminium (the ‘mother company’ of the SFI PhysMet partner Raufoss Technology.
With its focus on innovation, sustainability and energy management, the group of around 250 participants – aluminium industry experts from all over Europe – was offered a unique programme with explosive, highly topical content. More than 40 well-known specialists from politics, science and business shared their know-how in lectures and panel discussions and immersed themselves deeply in the subject matter.

A diverse range of cross-industry lectures and best practice examples, presentations on current industry developments, research results and future strategies was offered.
Randi Holmestad and Knut Marthinsen attended the conference on the first day while several experts and researcher from the SFI PhysMet partners: Hydro, Benteler, Raufoss Technology and SINTEF Manufacturing) attended the conference.
Senior Research Scientist, Calin Mariora, SINTEF gave an presentation with the title: The connection between microstructure and intergranular corrosion in 6xxx Al-alloys. And Chief Scientist, Ola Jensrud, SINTEF Manufacturing, gave a talk on: The use of aluminium in fatigue loaded situations.
