Dr. Trond Arne Hassel successfully defended his PhD thesis 28. November 2024. The doctoral work has been carried out at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and SINTEF Manufacturing, with Professor Knut Sørby as the main supervisor, and with Dr. Vegard Brøtan and Dr. Siri Marthe Arbo, from SINTEF Manufacturing, as his co-supervisors.
The topic of Trond Arne’s trial lecture was “Status and future outlook of wire vs powder as feedstock for directed energy deposition processes – a techno-economic review”. The trial lecture was followed by an excellent presentation of his PhD thesis: “Additive manufacturing of duplex stainless steels with coaxial laser directed energy deposition”. The main goal of this doctoral study has been to investigate and develop knowledge for the use of additive manufacturing (AM) in repair of large metal components. The work has been funded by the Research Council of Norway through the funding scheme “PhD scholarship in the Institute Sector” (Grant No 323332). The PhD work has also been supported by SFI PhysMet, where it has been a part of the research activities in Research Area RA4, Innovative processing and joining, and where he has worked closely with Dr. Siri Marthe Arbo, as one of his co-supervisors. Dr. Trond Arne Hassel is actually the first candidate to complete his PhD within SFI PhysMet consortium. Dr. Hassel will now after finishing his PhD start working at the Equinor R&D Centre in Trondheim.
