About the centre
The Norwegian Ocean Technology Centre will become a national knowledge centre for marine technology. With a world-leading educational and research environment, new laboratories, and close cooperation with the industry, the centre will contribute to the green shift of the ocean industries.
The core of the centre is the world-leading academic environment at the Department of Marine Technology at NTNU and SINTEF Ocean. This environment has played a key role in the development of Norway as a maritime nation and the Norwegian oil adventure.
Now, the same academic community is working with research and development that will contribute to the green shift in the ocean industries; such as zero emission shipping, renewable offshore energy, development of sustainable aquaculture, and ocean monitoring.
Laboratories
The centre consists of dry and wet laboratories, offices, meeting room facilities, and student facilities. The centre is located in Trondheim, Ålesund, Hitra, and Frøya.
The laboratories give researchers and the industry the opportunity to test new solutions in model experiments before they are tested at full scale, which is essential to reduce risk before the solutions are implemented.
Data simulation is also an important part of the centre's activities. Through the interplay with physical experiments, various digital simulation models are validated and improved.
Fjordlab, which will consist of installations in the ocean and seabed, have a crucial role in the research infrastructure. In Fjordlab, new models will be tested under real operating conditions and at full scale.
Structure and ownership
NTNU will own and operate the Norwegian Ocean Technology Centre on behalf of the Norwegian government. SINTEF Ocean will be an important operator and tenant.
The centre will be a national research infrastructure and is therefore available to other research institutions and the industry.
