Humans like us

When the Neanderthals became extinct approximately 40,000 years ago, there was only one human species left on Earth for the first time in our history.

The common ancestor to both us, Homo sapiens, and our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, lived approximately 6 million years ago. Along the line of evolution that has led us to where we are today, there have also been a number of other human species.

At least six of them lived at the same time as us, and several had abilities and ways of thinking that are similar to ours. Scientists don’t know for sure why we were the only ones who survived. In this exhibition, you can meet the other humans and explore our shared lineage.
