Explore Learning with Immersive Technologies

Explore Learning with Immersive Technologies

Immersive technologies include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality. These technologies are rapidly developing and are becoming an important part of the technological toolkit of teachers and trainers. The interest in the university teacher community for applying these technologies is very high.

IMTEL allows anyone interested in immersive technologies to Explore their possibilities first-hand, try different state-of-the-art and constantly updating hardware, test different software applications, and learn about the best practices in almost any educational application. Visitors can also discuss with IMTEL staff the possibilities to develop their own immersive educational materials.

IMTEL is generally open for visitors from both local and foreign delegations and individuals. One of the goals of the group is to raise awareness among NTNU employees, students, and the publica about immersive technologies and their use in education.

IMTEL Innovation days

IMTEL innovation days is a series of regular public events on various topics related to learning and immersive technologies. IMTEL research group organizes these public events since 2018. Each event features invited speakers from Norway and abroad sharing their expertise in keynote speeches, practical workshops, and demonstrations. The speakers represent both academia and industry. IMTEL innovation days are networking events that promote cross-disciplinary research, development and innovation. The events connect educators interested in exploring immersive technologies with technology experts, researchers, visual artists, and other teachers experienced using augmented and virtual reality. The events are very popular among NTNU students and contribute to competence development in the VRLab NTNU.

VRLab NTNU

VRLab NTNU (a network of VR labs across NTNU campuses, ongoing), grant by NTNU Property division

The IMTEL VR lab founded by the group is a unique facility and has attracted hundreds of visitors. The lab facilities have been used extensively by NTNU teachers and students in their course work, also during the pandemic. The IMTEL VR lab has since its opening served as a unique bridge connecting physical and virtual learning spaces. Its facilities and apps developed at the lab have been extensively used by several educators at NTNU as a part of their courses for hybrid teaching where traditional exercises and lectures were combined with virtual excursions, simulations and collaborative spaces.

Gemini Centre Extended Realities

IMTEL research represents NTNU in the GEMINI Centre for Extended Realities, a strategic cooperation between SINTEF, NTNU, and XR Norway.
