The Hybrid Power Lab

The Hybrid Power Lab is the latest addition to the machinery labs at NTNU in Ålesund. This lab is a downsized marine application consisting of modern hybrid technology. The purpose is to give the students system understanding, relevant practical and hands on exercises with experiments to support the understanding of system integration and how these components are working together.

In this lab we can measure and log process information from most of the components and equipments for use in project work and thesis.

Setup of the lab is based on:

  • Diesel generator
  • DC-grid switchboard
  • Maritime battery package for energy storage
  • Drives and converters
  • Transformers
  • Operation and control system
  • Power back to the grid

The Hybrid Power Lab is located at room C-129 at The Norwegian Maritime Competence Center.

High Voltage Switchboard

The High Voltage Switchboard is a marine switchboard used onboard ships. This lab is used to learn about and train on procedures, safe handling and operations of high voltage switchboards onboard ships as well as required tools and equipment to be used for handling high voltage.

The High Voltage Switchboard is located at room U-104 at the vocational school in Ålesund.

LNG-control system/simulator

The LNG- control system/simulator is a marine control system that is used onboard LNG fuelled ships. It gives us the possibilities to demonstrate how such system is handling the safety onboard control system.

The LNG-control system/simulator is located at room U-015 at the vocational school in Ålesund.
