MolCan
Molecular Cancer Research Group
Despite great progression in cancer treatment during the last decades, cancer is among the diseases that take most lives worldwide, and one in three individuals in Norway will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 75. Increased breast cancer incidence rates together with decreased mortality results in an increasing number of breast cancer survivors, several suffering long-term symptoms after treatment.
In the Molecular Cancer Research Group we aim to understand the molecular mechanisms leading to cancer development and progression, which will be crucial to determine strategies for cancer prevention, better treatment, and to reduce late effects from treatment. We aim to understand the molecular lifespan of cancer diseases, from early cancer development, throughout diagnosis and treatment, until follow-up of survivors. Our research includes molecular profiling of different biological materials, including cancer tissue, biofluids and fecal samples, with a particular focus on breast cancer. We utilize both clinical cohorts and large population cohorts, such as the Trøndelag Health study (link) in our research.
Additionally, the research group has a major interest in the development and use of statistical methods for large molecular data sets, which will be necessary for taking a leading role within cancer research in the years to come.
