SPRING 2025 CITIZEN SCIENCE ACTIVITY IN DIVERSEA
Spring 2025 has been a busy time for citizen science activities in DiverSea. First, DiverSea led an internal workshop to continue building a shared understanding of the role of citizen science within the DiverSea project. We were especially glad to be joined by external speakers Maiken Bjørkan and Liz Morris-Webb, both of Nordland Research Institute, who shared their experiences with building capacity for citizen engagement in the Horizon Europe project Prep4Blue.
Soon afterwards, DiverSea partners held a capacity building workshop at Çalış Beach in Fethiye, Turkey. Sedef Korkmaz, Project Manager at the Mediterranean Conservation Society (AKD) and task lead within DiverSea WP5 discussed citizen science standards at the European level, while Murat Ardelan, DiverSea coordinator and professor at NTNU, shared examples of citizen science within DiverSea. Other presenters delved into specific topics, including connections between plastic pollution and school curricula.
A field component to the workshop trained participants in data collection techniques that are a good fit for citizen science, including Secchi disk measurements, plankton sampling, and the use of data loggers.
