Admission requirements

Previous education

For admission to a PhD programme, the applicant must have a Master's degree or similar in a subject that is relevant to the programme, and a weighted average grade that correspond to A or B according to NTNU's grading scale.

Funding

Funding must always be documented when applying for admission to a PhD programme, whether it is a NTNU fellowship or by other means. Vacant PhD fellowships at NTNU are announced at jobbnorge.no.

Please note that employment as a PhD fellow will not automatically grant admission to the PhD Programme. You should apply for admission within 3 months after your first day at work.

Project description

A full project plan must follow the application for admission, including an academic outline of the project and the planned schedule. The applicant must have made contact and reached an agreement with a prospective supervisor at this point. The applicant and main supervisor should work together in the preparation of the project description.

Admission procedures

a) Admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences can be granted at any point in time in the academic year. There is no set deadline exept that the application for admission must be approved within 3 months of the employment start date.

b) An application for admission (using a standardized form with attachments) must be sent to the department in which the student and supervisor are affiliated. The department will quality assure formal aspects of the application and undertake an administrative assessment before the application is forwarded to the programme board for the PhD programme in question.

c) The programme board undertakes an academic assessment of the application and makes it's recommendation to the Faculty as to whether or not the application should be granted.

d) The Faculty will make the final decision for or against admission based on the recommendation form the programme board. A copy of the decision will be sent to the candidate, the supervisor and the department in question.

e) A candidate whose academic studies belong under a number of PhD programmes can choose which programme to apply to for admission.

Any financial liabilities and benefits, as well as academic credit, shall belong to the faculty where the candidate is being supervised and has his or her academic ties.
