Course content

This practical training subject builds further on the subject VET2005 Practical training 3, with a deeper focus on environmental therapeutic work, habilitation and rehabilitation within various service areas. Through practical training, the student will reflect over their own relational, communicational, and guidance skills in collaboration with patients, users, relatives, and other professionals. The student will also integrate knowledge of relevant working methods and forms of treatment in the assessment of professional and ethical issues. During this practical training period, the student will show that he/she can fulfill the professional role of social educator.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After having completed and passed VET2303, the student will

  • have broad knowledge of environmental work, environmental therapeutic work, habilitation and rehabilitation work, particularly within various service areas for people with developmental disabilities, dementia, drug addiction, mental health disorders, and various physical impairments.
  • have broad knowledge of the connections between health, disabilities, functional impairment, and illness in an individual, social and life-course perspective.
  • have broad knowledge of public health work, disease prevention and health promotion at an individual, group and community level.
  • have broad knowledge of legal, ethical and professional requirements that are expected of the social educator as a professional practitioner.

Skills

After having completed and passed VET2303, the student should be able to

  • apply relevant methods in mapping and investigatory work to identify users' goals and needs, and document this as a basis for measures in environmental therapeutic work.
  • plan and carry out habilitation and rehabilitation processes in collaboration with patients, users, relatives, and other cooperating actors.
  • apply up-to-date knowledge of the health and welfare system, laws, regulations, and guide in their service performance to ensure equal and professionally sound offers to service recipients.
  • reflect over their own relational, communicative and guidance competence.

General competence

After having completed and passed VET2303, the student will

  • have insight into theories, processes, and methods required to offer coordinated, coherent and knowledge-based habilitation, rehabilitation, and environmental therapeutic work.
  • have insight into relevant professional and ethical issues in the social educator's professional practice and can identify, reflect on and handle these in practice through professional judgement
  • be able to plan, implement, document and evaluate measures and service design based on users' goals and needs, independently and in collaboration with users and others, in line with professional guidelines, ethical requirements and guidelines.
  • be able to plan and carry out daily care, basic nursing procedures and drug handling according to current regulations in a caring and professionally sound manner.

Learning methods and activities

  • Compulsory presence and active participation in the practice site's operations.
  • Supervision with practice-supervisor and employees at the practice site.
  • Reflection through written work, conversations with the supervisor and other employees at the practice site, and through conversations with fellow students and subject teachers on the compulsory seminar days.

Further on evaluation

The practical training exam consists of attendance, completed practice objectives, participation in the learning activities in the subject, as well as an approved suitability assessment. Academic and formal requirements appear in the learning platform Blackboard (in the practice booklet). Seminar days, start-up form with learning plan, assessment form, reflection exercise, as well as TverrSam (interdisciplinary collaboration) and TverrPraks (interdisciplinary mapping), must be approved in order for the practical exam to be passed. Participation in TverrSam and TverrPraks is valid for up to 5 terms, while the other compulsory activities are only valid for 1 term.

If the student receives a failing grade on the practical training exam, the entire practical training period must be completed again in the next ordinary practical training period. The student has the opportunity to present him/herself for the practical training exam twice.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Social Education (HSGVEB)

Required previous knowledge

The subject has a study right requirement, which means that the course is reserved for students who have been admitted to a bachelor's degree in social education at NTNU in Trondheim (HSGVEB). VET2005 Practical training 3 must have been passed.
