Course content
The course gives an introduction to modern German culture based on a selection of post-World War II literary works, non-fictional prose, film and/or other popular cultural expressions. As a result of their work with the selected curriculum, students will be enabled to identify and reflect on different modes of narration and to strenghten their proficiency in German.
Learning outcome
KNOWLEDGE
The candidate
- has knowledge of central literary and cultural issues related to the period from 1945 to the present
- has knowledge of the stylistic characteristics of the course material
PROFICIENCY
The candidate
- is able to summarize a content, identify stylistic aspects and narrative structures, formulate their own interpretations and justify them in both oral and written German
- is able to categorise the course materiel according to genre
- is able to ascertain correlations between literary texts and their cultural and historical context
GENERAL COMPETENCE
The candidate
- is able to reflect on thematical and cultural issues in contemporary German literature and culture based on the course materials
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, group sessions and written assignments.
Compulsory assignments:
- 2 short written assignments in German
- 80% mandatory attendance
Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

The exam must be answered in German.
Recommended previous knowledge
German from Norwegian "videregående skole" (Upper secondary school) with a grade 4 or better, or knowledge of German equivalent to level A2 or better according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is required. The course is taught exclusively in German.
