Course content

The Maritime Act, The Maritime Safety Act, P&I insurance, Transport insurance, Hull insurance, The scope of the insurance, The policyholder's and the insured's conditions, The insurer's liability, Liability Premium, The compensation settlement, Co-insurance, The relationship between the main and co-insurer by proxy, The special nature of contract law, What it means that a binding agreement has been entered into, What rights and obligations the parties have in a contractual relationship, What sanctions are available to the parties in the event of default

Learning outcome

Learning outcomes - Knowledge:

  • document good knowledge of the methodology to be used to solve legal problems
  • document good knowledge and understanding of the laws and regulations required before a contract is bound
  • use legal, scientific methodology and working methods for the development of written reports
  • document good knowledge in marine insurance and maritime law
  • document insight and understanding of insurance contracts, laws, rules that apply to marine insurance
  • independently update their knowledge within the subject area, both through literature searches, contact with academic environments and by revising their own practice.

Learning outcomes - Skills:

  • describe in detail the different types of insurance - coverage and limitation
  • work independently and solve simple accident settlements within the subject areas
  • hull and P&I read and assess the correctness of more complicated insurance settlements
  • explain the main principles of contract law, including the conditions for concluding an agreement, invalid agreements and entering into an agreement by proxy
  • explain what it means that a binding agreement has been entered into, i.e., what rights and obligations the parties have in a contractual relationship, including explaining what sanctions the parties have disposition in the event of default, changes in the parties' benefits after the contract has been entered into, obstacles to performance, etc.

Learning outcomes - Competence:

  • ability to assess environmental, ethical, and economic consequences of maritime transport in a global perspective and be able to realize this knowledge through their further professional career ability to assess whether an agreement entered into is bound by applicable rules
  • what rights and obligations the parties have in a contractual relationship as well as what sanctions are at the parties 'disposal in the event of default changes in the parties' benefits after the contract has been entered into
  • ability to actively participate in professional discussions and have the ability to share their knowledge and experiences with others and contribute to the development of good practice within the subject area
  • ability to convey professional information both in writing and orally
