Course content

The judicial system, The characteristics of maritime law, Laws and regulations pertaining to: Vessels, Nationality and registration, Shipping and distribution of liability,The limited liability of shipowners, Oil spill liability and other environmental liabilities, Collision liability, Crew's legal relations, Chartering - an outline Transportation of passengers and luggage, Salvage, General Average. The course of Maritime Law provides the students with an understanding of the laws and regulations pertaining to international shipping.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: document in-depth knowledge of maritime law in accordance with STCW chapters II / 1 and II / 2 and relevant parts of STCW code A-II / 1 function. Control of the ship's operation and care for persons at the operational level and STCW code A-II / 2 function. Control of the ship's operation and care for persons at the management level. Document good knowledge of the structure and distinctiveness of the judiciary, document insight and understanding of the laws and regulations that apply to international shipping, apply the laws, conventions and standard contracts that regulate registration of ships, operations and responsibilities in commercial shipping, use scientific methodology and working methods for developing written reports. Be able to independently update their knowledge within the subject area, both through literature searches, contact with academic environments and by revising their own practice. Skills: describe in detail how the judiciary and the courts function in Norway, explain in detail the characteristics of maritime law, conventions and standard contracts, assess and propose how the responsibility should be distributed with reference to current laws in the event of accidents and other incidents where the ship is responsible. Assess and propose a solution to current conflicts that may arise during salvage and damage to cargo with reference to current laws. Be able to show that one masters the subject of the subject through written reports and oral presentations.
