Learning outcome

have thorough knowledge of loading, discharging and handling of cargo pursuant to STCW Chapter II/1 and II/2 and STCW Code A-II/1 function Cargo Handling and Stowage at the operational level and A-II/2 function Cargo Handling and Stowage at management level

have thorough knowledge of relevant national and international rules and regulations regarding to loading, discharging, handling and stowage of cargo

have knowledge cargo transport at sea in a historical perspective, the technological development within the subject area and have knowledge of the social, environmental, safety, ethical, and economical consequences regarding carriage of cargo at sea

be able to update his/her knowledge within the subject area, both through search of literature, contact with the research community and by revision of own work experience

be able to apply international rules, codes and standards regarding the safe handling, stowage, securing and transport of goods at sea

calculate the effect of cargo and cargo operations on the ship´s draft, trim and stability

distribute the cargo to obtain shear forces, bending moments and torsion moments within the relevant limits for the ship

be able to use data based cargo loading program

give an account of requirements regarding stowage and securing of cargo on board ships

describe cargo handling and securing equipment

describe cargo handling operations with emphasise on transport of cargo listed in ¿The Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing¿

on a general level give an account of tankers and operation of tankers

give an account of international rules, codes, standards and recommendations regulating carriage of dangerous cargo at sea

be able to apply the following codes: IMDG Code, IMSBC code, BLU code and Grain code

be aware of the environmental, ethical and economical consequences of carriage of goods at sea, both in a local and global perspective, and have the ability to realise this knowledge through his/her professional career at sea

participate in professional discussions and share his/her knowledge and experiences and contribute to the development of good practice
