Course content

The subject covers the requirement for knowledge according to relevant parts of STCW chapters II/1 and II/2 and STCW code A-II/1 "Navigation at the operational level" and STCW code A-II/2 "Navigation at the management level"Use of Radar/ECDIS/ARPA/AIS as an aid in coastal navigation and open waters including cadet navigation course. Ship designations, ship types, ship movements, position designations and watch arrangementsTerrestrial and astronomical navigationCoordinates on earth: latitude and longitude, directions and distances, courses and bearings, power connection and operation, course corrections. Paper maps, map catalogues, scale, map projection and geodetic datum, map datum (LAT, MV, HAT) Nautical marks, beacons and map symbols, positions in the map: latitude/longitude, bearing/distance, cross and four-dash bearing, distance/distance.Preparation, planning, implementation and evaluation of voyages, in paper and electronic charts, AIS and AIS-SART, racon, aton, SART, Autopilot, Magnetic and gyrocompassApplication of navigation systems in planning and carrying out safe sailingRisk assessment, as well as assessment of the necessary margins for safe sailingApplication of the international rules to avoid collisions at sea Steering control system Compass / Gyro systems / SonarSatellite and land-based navigation systemsSignaling SRC (Short Range Certificate): GMDSS Sea Area A1, Morse and signal flags IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP)

Learning methods and activities

Pedagogical methods: Lectures, laboratory exercises, CBT, simulator exercises, individual and group work.

Mandatory work requirements: Minimum 80% participation in simulator and navigation lab exercises.

Compulsory submissions must be approved in order to sit the exam (the number of submissions is stated at the start of the course).

ICT tools must be used in submissions/work requirements (PDF format) delivered in the LMS

Approved submissions give access to the first ordinary exam, as well as the first new and postponed exam. New and postponed exams are held the following semester and can be changed to an oral exam.
