Stresses in cylindrical and spherical vessels and pipes. Cables. 2D and 3D stress state. Hooke's law. Principal stresses and strains. Mises yield criteria. Moment of plasticity. Composite beams. Buckling of columns and beams.
Learning outcome
The two basic courses Mechanics 1 and Mechanics 2 provide a basic knowledge of statics and strength of materials. The courses are compulsory for study programs MTBYGG, MTING, MTMART and MTPROD. The two courses form a foundation for advanced topics in solid mechanics at these study programs. Mechanics 2 has the following learning objectives:
Knowledge:
The candidate should have knowledge of:
- The difference between statically determinate and indeterminate structures
- Plane (2D) and solid (3D) structures
- Definition of shear stress, shear strain and shear modulus
- Source and distribution of shear stresses in beams
- Source and distribution of stresses in thin-walled pipes and containers
- Source and distribution of forces in cables
- Transformation of stresses and strains between different reference systems
- Plan stress and strain conditions
- Isotropic yield criteria (Mises)
- Moment of plasticity in beams
- Stresses in composite beams
- Phenomenology and mathematical treatment of buckling
Skills:
The candidate is able to:
- Determine the forces and deformations in simple statically indeterminate system
- Calculate the shear stresses caused by V
- Calculate stresses in thin-walled pipes and containers
- Transforming stresses and strains, including determining the principal stresses
- Calculate moment of plasticity in cross-sections
- Calculate stresses in beam cross-sections and in composite beams
- Calculate the elastic buckling load
- Apply Python as a tool in analysis of problems in mechanics
General competence:
The candidate can:
- Explain the basic principles of mechanics of materials
- Perform simple calculations by hand and with Python in the framework of the syllabus of the course
- Be able to use physical insight to analyze and solve statics and strength of materials problems within the framework of the syllabus of the course
Digital competence
Programming with Python: Simple calculations, curve plotting, read data from file, numerical integration, regression, algorithmic thinking
Sustainability competence
The course serves to give the students appropriate skills to design safe, cost-effective and sustainable structures.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, calculation exercises and laboratory exercise. Python is applied in some exercise problems. Access to the exam requires that the laboratory exercise and 2/3 of the calculation exercises have to be approved.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises
Further on evaluation
If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral exam.
