Course content
TEP4255 deals with heat pumping processes and systems applied in different kinds of refrigeration units, from smaller plants in domestic units and supermarket, to industrial plants in food and process industry, including gas liquefaction. Historic development, and importance of refrigeration technology. Thermodynamic analysis of different refrigeration processes; with special emphasis on thermodynamic losses. Properties of working fluids, with focus on natural, environmentally friendly, working fluids. Refrigeration system components, including compressors, heat exchangers and expansion devices. Component design. System solutions for different applications, both refrigeration and heat pump systems. Low temperature gas condensing systems. Heat driven systems (Absorption). Low temperature thermal storage.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The course provides the student with knowledge about: - Thermodynamical process analyses - Working fluids physical properties and environmental consequences - System solution for different applications The course gives the student insight about: - Modes of operation for heat pumping processes and systems - Working fluids areas of operation and environmental consequences, including the phase change (liquid and gas) and mixtures - Main Components operations in heat pumping processes, as compressors, evaporators, condensers and valves - Energy efficient improvements, including cold thermal storage.
Skills: The course should enable the student to: - Design and dimensioning of refrigeration and heat pumps for different areas of operation - Calculate thermodynamical losses in processes for optimization of process and components - Dimensioning of systems and components using digital tools
General competence: The course should give the student: - Basic knowledge about thermodynamical analysis of processes - Understanding of system and the capability to evaluate the energy efficiency of processes (energy quality) - Overview of the implementing areas from processes for condensing of natural gas , though freezing and chilling processes to heat pumping systems for building and industrial processes.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, theoretical exercises, practical exercises in laboratory and an excursion in Trondheim region. The lectures and exercises are in English. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. The exam will be given in English only.
