Course - Gas Technology - TEP4185
TEP4185 - Gas Technology
About
Examination arrangement
Course content
The course comprises selected industrial applications of industrial process systems and energy conversion processes, with emphasis on natural gas. Introductorily, an overview of important problems and challenges in Norwegian gas industry is given. Then some selected applications are treated in more detail. These applications are natural gas processing, natural gas power plants and LNG-technology. Hydrogen as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS) are also covered. The course is taught in close cooperation with relevant Norwegian industry.
Learning outcome
The course provides the student with knowledge about: - The natural gas value chain from well to market - How to describe central process units and some of the main equipment in the chain - Mathematical models used in HYSYS process simulator and programmed in Python - Processes for removal of H2S and CO2 from natural gas - The elements of LNG chains with main focus on natural gas liquefaction technology - Basic thermodynamic properties and characteristics of LNG - Natural gas purification needs and quality specifications for LNG - LNG plant block diagrams - Process flow diagrams and principles for the major types of liquefaction processes - Optimization of single mixed refrigerant processes. - Cryogenic heat exchanger principles - Gas turbine based power generation, with respect to unit operations involved and system integration - Fluid flow in turbo machinery; compressors and turbines, as well to understanding how thermal energy is converted to work - Steam production in Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) - Operational characteristic of a gas turbine; compressor map, turbine map, choking conditions for pressure determination. - Basic control of gas turbines - Hydrogen processes and carbon capture and storage. The course gives the student insight about: - Natural gas processing - Production and handling of LNG - Power generation and cogeneration with natural gas Skills: The course should enable the student to: - Establish process simulation models for gas processing steps in the process simulator HYSYS. - Construction of heating/cooling curves of LNG processes by the use of HYSYS. - The student shall be able to calculate an off-design and or part-load conditions of a gas turbine. - How to calculate the steam production in HRSGs. General competence: The course should give the student: - Insight in industrial processes based on thermodynamics and mass and heat transfer. Further, the student should develop skills in applying basic theory in solving engineering problems.
Learning methods and activities

Further on evaluation
Portofolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a written exam (70%) and two oral exams (each 15%).
If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
For a re-take of examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.
For a re-take of an examination, assignments shall not be re-taken. Assignment scores from first attempt will be used.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on TEP4115/TEP4120 Engineering Thermodynamics 1 and TEP4130 Heat and Mass Transfer.
