Course content
TEGN2012 is based on TEGN1102, TEGN1106, TEGN2000 and TEGN2011 and introduces basic concepts in linguistics, focusing on signed languages. Students will get an overview of the phonology, morphology and syntax of signed languages, and we will discuss different sign types in the vocabularies of signed languages. Students will learn to identify and describe different characteristics of Norwegian Sign Language, using the correct linguistic terminology, by e.g. using different annotation tools on (video recorded) Norwegian Sign Language discourse. Students will continue to develop their abilities toread and write academic texts.

Candidates
- know the basic concepts used in signed language linguistics
- have a basic knowledge of central aspects of the structure of Norwegian Sign Language
- can identify and describe different traits of signed languages using the correct linguistic terminology
- can use annotation tools
- can present their own analysis in a simple academic text
Learning methods and activities
- Lectures, group discussions and class discussions, project including practical exercises in analysis and annotation.
- 80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)
- Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Further on evaluation
Oral sign language exam in groups of 3 to 5 students with individual grades. Student should prepareto participate in a professional conversation (up to 30 minutes) where each student gives a shortpresentation and then participates in a discussion of the topic of the presentation. The discussion is led by the students, the teacher can participate and there is an external examiner present. Duringthe preparation phaseall examination aids are allowed, during the conversation no examination aidsare allowed.
Specific conditions
Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department. It is not possible for students who have passed the exam in TEGN2012 to retake the exam in a semester where this course is not taught. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to illness may submit the exam in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any supervision.

The course is taught in Norwegian sign language and requires the ability to analyze Norwegian sign language.
