Course content
This course is composed of writing an independent assignment (FOU oppgave), part of which entails locating and reading relevant peer-reviewed sources that will be used in the assignment. Under supervision, the student will design and carry out a research project which findings are documented in the written assignment (i.e., FOU oppgave). Knowledge about the learning situation for signing pupils should be central for this work, as well as the current curricula for the subject. The candidate will acquire various learning strategies, and start using learning resources such as digital tools in order to subsequently be able to them in their teaching with the best possible didactic adjustments. The candidate will develop their knowledge and understanding about what it takes to plan, implement and evaluate learning activities in and about Norwegian Sign Language. This should also be linked up to how a teacher can support pupils' basic knowledge in the subject, their multilingualism, and competencies in the subject.

- has knowledge about genres and their typical characteristics, as well as norms for academic text production, the use of references, and how to protect the privacy of participants in a study
- has knowledge about central documents and current curricula and other teaching related documents for Norwegian Sign Language in school, focusing on the age group they will teach
- can locate, understand, refer to, and reflect on relevant Norwegian Sign Language pedagogy and didactics research literature, and write academic texts
- can collect and adapt information about society, cultural topics, and cultural themes for use in teaching including interdisciplinary topics

- can reflect on signing pupils' learning situation and teach them on a basic level
- can account for different views on communication and language throughout the history of the teaching of hard of hearing persons
- can convey basic knowledge about the subject Norwegian Sign Language to pupils and others
- can critically reflect around possibilities to facilitate communication, for example by arranging meeting spaces for signing pupils from different schools and by using virtual classrooms, but also via interpreting

- can critically reflect on their own learning and praxis in light of ethical values and the school's responsibility for children and adolescents' personal development
- can maintain and develop their own linguistic and didactic competency and contribute to development and innovation in the field
- can plan and implement teaching in Norwegian Sign Language on a basic level, for grades 1-7 or 5-10
- can set up clear aims for their teaching and evaluate the pupils’ learning outcomes
- can organize varied learning activities, and use digital resources which convey knowledge about Norwegian Sign Language that promote linguistic exchange as well as pupils' basic skills and development in the subject
Learning methods and activities
The FOU oppgave is an independent piece of work complemented by individual supervision. It is expected that students access academic materials for independent study, but also engage in group work outside of class and on the digital learning platform. In addition teaching takes place in the form of lectures, group work and through the digital learning platform.
Obligatory assignments
80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)
1. Submit a description of topic and research question for their FOU-oppgave. 2 & 3. Written progress reports. 4. Presentation of the research project in Norwegian Sign Language. Obligatory assignments are evaluated as approved/not approved. Obligatory assignments must be approved before the student can take an exam.

Further on evaluation
A written individual academic paper that discusses the student's own research project (FOU oppgave). (7500-8000 words, excluding references and appendix). New/postponed exams are organized according to existing study regulations at NTNU.
