Examination arrangement

Course content

The course is about informal language learning and is aimed at language teachers in Norwegian as a second language, French, Spanish and English. The main focus is on learning languages outside the classroom and on how to connect formal and informal language learning. The course provides an introduction to several theoretical perspectives on the concept of informal language learning and what this knowledge can mean for teaching practice. Examples are given of informal language learning activities, of how to promote pupils' second language activities outside the classroom, and of how these activities can be integrated into classroom teaching.

Learning methods and activities

The course is purely web-based. The activities in the course are largely based on the participants' experiences and teaching practice, and a combination of individual work and reflection and practical work in groups is planned. There will be 2-3 online lectures/seminars during the semester, but otherwise the learning work will take place asynchronously. Teaching materials and assignments will be available on NTNU's platform for digital courses.

Assignments are assessed as approved/not approved, and they are not part of the final examination grade, but all obligatory assignments must be approved in order for the student to qualify to take the exam. Two of the obligatory assignments are subject to revision based on feedback and will be submitted in the exam portfolio at the end of the semester.

The course concludes with a portfolio exam, consisting of 3 elements (two compulsory assignments and a reflective text). The portfolio is given one overall grade, and all elements must be assessed as meeting requirements for a pass grade. This applies to postponed exams as well.

Students may choose to do the individual obligatory assignments and the exam in one of the following languages: Norwegian, French, Spanish or English.

Recommended previous knowledge

The course has restricted admission. The restriction also applies to the possibility to specialise in the individual language covered.
